Start Good Swim Habits with These 3 Easy at Home Changes
Are you a busy mom with a little one learning to swim? While home practice is great, finding time can be a challenge. Here are 3 simple swaps in things you are already doing that will make your little one’s learn-to-swim journey smooth sailing — without a big-time commitment.
Instead of using a cup or pitcher to rinse shampoo, have your little one lie back to rinse their hair – As a long-time swim instructor, I’d say one of the hardest parts of learning to backfloat is getting comfortable in a backward position. Since back floating starts with relaxing, regular consistent practice is key. Use bath time to let them spend a minute or two leaning back during each bath time. Your child’s swim instructor will thank you for it.
Spend time talking about swim lessons at home – Keep swim lessons front and center by talking about them, even if you don’t have time to practice the skills. Ask your little one what they practiced that week. Have them “teach” you a new skill they are learning. Encourage them to reenact those skills through dramatic play with their toys. These small conversations help reinforce their learning and keep them excited about swimming.
Ditch the bath visors, let them get their face wet in the tub – Getting kids comfortable with water on their faces will be a game-changer. Although it may take some getting used to (especially as they get older) it’s absolutely worth it. Comfort in the water is a precursor to learning to swim, and only comes with practice. Use bath time to easily fit consistent practice into your busy schedule.
