How to Choose the Right Swim Lessons

Choosing swim lessons for your child can be a difficult decision. Here are some things to look at to help you make the best decision about a swim school for your child.

Curriculum

You’ll want to choose a curriculum that aligns with your goals for your child. Are you interested in safety skills? Self-Rescue skills? Fun? Proper technique? A mix?

For most beginners, a curriculum that teaches both safety and foundational swim skills is best.

Facility

When looking for a swim school, there should ALWAYS be a lifeguard on duty during swim lessons, regardless of the instructors certifications. Sure, a swim instructor can also be a lifeguard, but when they are teaching lessons, they cannot also act as a lifeguard.

A facility that is clean and well maintained is a must, and it’s also a good idea to check out what the changing facilities look like. This can help you plan for changing after the lessons.

Instructor’s Training

When I was a new instructor, I learned far more from shadowing experienced instructors than I ever did from any certification class. While the certifications are important, I believe that training is more important. It’s okay to inquire about the instructors experience and training background before registering.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, don’t be afraid to ask questions!
