Getting Started with Swimming

Before learning to swim, it’s important to set your child up for success with a strong foundation of water comfort and confidence, as well as some basic safety. If you haven’t already, check out the Foundational Water Skills first. Once your child has the water basics mastered, it’s time to start swimming!

These beginner swim skills will focus on both building on the basics to begin learning self-rescue skills and introduce effective forward movement to swim safe distances. After mastering these skills, your child will have the swimming skills recommended for all by the American Red Cross.
